How to Choose an Online Counseling Program

When reviewing online counseling programs, consider what each school offers and how it meets your learning needs. Here are some factors you might consider:

How Online Counseling Programs Work

Online counseling programs feature the same content and accreditation requirements as on-campus programs but function differently. Online programs come in two formats: fully online and hybrid.

Fully online counseling programs feature entirely online coursework, plus the in-person clinical requirements. Clinical hours are required for counseling licensure and programmatic accreditation, and you can't properly complete them online. For example, the practicum and internship requirements include several hundred hours of supervised practice in a clinical setting and a minimum of nearly 300 hours of direct client service.

Hybrid programs also feature online courses and the same in-person clinical requirements, but they also feature some on-campus classes. Hybrid programs typically offer between 25%-75% of courses online — with most hands-on and practice-based courses running on campus.

Practical Experience Requirements

A master's in counseling must meet internship and practicum requirements for accreditation and state licensure.

For CACREP accreditation, the practicum must feature 100 supervised clinical hours, 40 hours including direct service with clients. The internship must feature 600 hours, at least 240 hours, including direct service with clients.

These hands-on placements allow you to apply your learning to clinical situations. Not only can you develop practical skills, but you'll also get direct feedback on your interactions with clients.

While many schools help you set up your internships and practicums, online students can often coordinate these experiences themselves at a location near them. Your program coordinator must still sign off on the opportunity before you start.

Frequently Asked Questions About Online Counseling Degree Programs

What is the best degree to become a counselor?

To become a counselor, you must complete a master's degree in psychology, counseling, or a related mental health field. You should ensure the program meets the licensure requirements for your state, such as having the required accreditation, required courses, and minimum clinical hours.

According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), one of the most in-demand counseling professions is substance use, behavioral disorder, and mental health counseling. The BLS projects 19% growth between 2023 and 2033, 15 percentage points higher than the average projected occupational growth.

The highest annual average wage for counselors is $105,260 for those in the business, professional, labor, and political industries, reports the BLS. Counselors in the insurance industry come in second at $91,470.
