- Effects of Music in a Retail Setting on Real & Perceived Shopping Times
pop
This paper extends research linking shopping behavior to environmental factors through changes in emotional states. With time fixed or variable during a simulated shopping experiment, shoppers were exposed to music varying by degree of familiarity. Afterward, subjects reported their perceptions of shopping duration, their emotional states, and their merchandise evaluations. Analyses revealed that individuals reported themselves as shopping longer when exposed to familiar music but actually shopped longer when exposed to unfamiliar music.

- Objects, Decision Considerations and Self-Image in Men's and Women's Impulse Purchases
pop
In this paper, we propose and examine a social psychological model of impulse buying, which predicts that people intend to acquire material symbols of personal and social identity. Current theories in economics (e.g., discounting models), marketing (e.g., information-processing models) and psychology (e.g., addiction models) fail to explain underlying reasons for impulse buying and, crucially, why particular goods (e.g., clothes) are bought impulsively more than others (e.g., tools).

- Trust and Egoism in Welfare Markets
Enthusiasm for the expansion of markets in welfare reflects the currency of assumptions derived from rational choice theory among policy-makers. This article reviews recent evidence that calls into question the basic tenet of the rational choice approach - that individual choices are driven by instrumental rationality - and argues that welfare markets require a normative framework which in which trust plays an important role.
